SOUTHPORT 30TH BALL OF THE YEAR 2014
The Old Time Dance Society held its 30th Anniversary Ball at the Floral Hall in Southport,
England on Saturday 24th May 2014. Dancers started arriving at Southport early in
the week from all over the U.K. plus members from Canada. Some had arrived early
so they could take in some of the sites others for relaxation before the dancing
commenced on the Friday evening.
Our Hotel in Southport was the Royal Clifton Hotel, situated on the seafront, just
a short distance from the Floral Hall Ballroom.
Friday Night – Pre-Ball
It is always a daunting task, being MC’s and dance leaders on the opening night but
on this occasion, we were in the very safe hands of the excellent Ron & June Urquhart
from Hull in East Yorkshire. Armed with a superb programme of Old Time Dances and
with David Last providing some great music from the stage, the weekends dancing got
off to a great start.
Just inside the ballroom foyer, Mr Mike Savory of Fyna Shoes had set up shop with
a dazzling display of dance shoes that seemed to delight the ladies their Gentlemen!
and Presidents alike!
Saturday Night – 30th Anniversary Ball of the Year
The Saturday Night Ball is always a glittering affair with over 200 in attendance.
The Societies Guests of Honour were – the Mayor of Sefton Borough Council, Councillor
Maureen Fearn and her Consort Frank Winrow. Also the President of the A.D.A. John
Murphy and his wife Suzanne, the President of the N.C.D.T.A. Gae Sowerby and her
mother Mrs Irene Hall. Also present representing the ISTD were Mr Terry Hunt and
Ms Barbara. Harvey
Our MC’s and leaders for the Ball were Grahame & Bernice Baldwin of Burnley in Lancashire
with the music being provided again by Mr. David Last. With an impressive 26 Dances
on the programme an excellent evening of dancing followed. It was good to see the
inclusion on the program of the L’Inspiration Gavotte which was first seen in 1914
– exactly 100 years ago this year.
During the evening the Societies President Mr. Fred Boast and Secretary June Urquhart
presented the Mayor of Sefton B.C. Councillor Maureen Fearn with a floral bouquet
in thanks for all the help and support given to the Society by the Council in staging
this event. By the time the coaches arrived close to Midnight, there were visible
signs of wear & tear showing on many dancers!!!
Sunday Evening – Post Ball
Our last evening together is always a somewhat sad occasion, but who better to provide
and host our last night of dancing but the excellent Keith & Kath Jackson from Sheffield
– our new area reps for the West Riding of Yorkshire. With a great program of 20
Traditional Old Time Dances, Keith and Kath gave a faultless performance a really
great way to finish this spectacular weekend of dancing.
So as we come to the end of another Ball of the Year - our 30th Anniversary. Where
else on earth can you get 3 consecutive nights of 66 Top Class Traditional Old Time
Dances – at a Top Class Venue, with top class leaders plus top class music??? Absolutely
Priceless. As always, this could only have been achieved by months and sometimes
years of behind the scenes hard work by a dedicated committee, dance leaders and
so many others who contributed in many ways but in particular our event organiser
Mr. Paul Harding who’s tireless efforts made this 30th Anniversary Ball run so smoothly
